Itire-Ikate Local Council Development Area (LCDA) has commemorated the National Tree Planting Day with a tree planting exercise aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and creating awareness on the importance of preserving the ecosystem.
The exercise, themed “Trees for Lagos: Our City, Our Responsibility,” was held on Tuesday, July 14, at Sijuade Primary School, Odo-Olowu, Ijeshatedo. The event brought together Environmental Health Officers, representatives of the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK), Community Development Committee (CDC) members, residents as well as the Council’s management and staff.
Speaking at the event, LASPARK representative, Miss Fatokun Tolulope, highlighted the critical role of tree planting in mitigating the effects of climate change. She emphasized the need for sustained collaboration between government and residents to achieve a greener and healthier environment.
Representing the Executive Chairman of Itire-Ikate LCDA, Hon. Oluwafemi Odunayo Daniel, the Secretary to the Local Government (SLG), Hon. Kelvin Lawal underscored the environmental and social benefits of trees. He also stressed the importance of proper waste disposal as a means of preventing flooding and maintaining a clean environment. He reaffirmed the commitment of the Executive Chairman to initiatives that promote environmental sustainability and community development.
Also speaking, the LASPARK Desk Officer for Itire-Ikate LCDA, Sanitarian Tijani Kehinde explained the numerous benefits of tree planting, including oxygen production, reduction of air pollution, climate change mitigation through afforestation, provision of habitats for wildlife, and the preservation of a healthier environment for future generations. He encouraged residents to cultivate the habit of planting and nurturing trees within their homes and communities.
The event concluded with the symbolic planting of trees within the school premises by members of the executive, legislative, and management arms of the council, reaffirming the collective commitment of Itire-Ikate LCDA to building a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable environment.
