Following June 27 exercise, Odunayo flags NURTW inaction, illegal construction, and refuse menace across LCDA
The Executive Chairman of Itire-Ikate Local Council Development Area, Hon. Oluwafemi Daniel Odunayo, has called on residents and business owners to sustain the momentum of the June 2026 Environmental Sanitation Exercise by taking direct action against environmental nuisance.
The Council-wide exercise was held on Saturday, 27th June 2026, from 6:30 AM to 8:30 AM across Itire, Ikate, and Ijesha communities, under the theme: “Our Environment, Our Responsibility”.
Post-Exercise Review and Concerns
While commending residents and market leaders who participated, Hon. Odunayo identified four areas requiring urgent community and stakeholder intervention.
- NURTW Participation: Concern over the “nonchalant attitude” of some members of the NURTW at Ijesha Bus Stop, near Akorede Market, who failed to mobilize their members for the exercise.
- Illegal Refuse Dumping: Condemnation of the continued indiscriminate dumping of refuse on the boundary between Itire-Ikate LCDA and Mushin Local Government by residents along Lawson Road, described as a threat to public health and inter-council relations.
- Expressway Walkway Abuse: Appeal to residents and shop owners along the Oshodi Expressway to take ownership by apprehending and discouraging individuals who dump waste on the walkway.
- Illegal Business Structures: The Chairman raised concern over illegal construction for business purposes within residential and setback areas, noting that such structures are contributing to environmental nuisance, traffic obstruction, and strain on public infrastructure.
> “Our business owners need an enabling environment to operate and thrive. However, that environment must be lawful, safe, and not at the expense of community wellbeing. We are ready to engage stakeholders to provide proper avenues for legitimate commerce,” he said.
Chairman’s Charge
“We cannot sustain #ACleanerLagos if we leave the responsibility to government alone. I am appealing to our NURTW leaders at Ijesha, residents on Lawson Road, business owners, and our people along Oshodi Expressway to act. If you see someone dumping on the walkway or erecting illegal structures, speak up. This community belongs to all of us,” the Chairman stated.
Next Steps
The Council reiterated its commitment to a partnership-driven approach, emphasizing community ownership over sanctions. The LCDA will engage relevant business associations to address compliance and create enabling spaces for commerce. Residents are also urged to continue bagging refuse properly, keeping drainages clear, and supporting the Environmental Sanitation Monitoring Team.
